Literary agents represent writers to the industry and attempt to sell their clients' screenplays or obtain writing assignments for their clients. Some of the major literary agencies in Hollywood include:

  • Creative Artists Agency
  • William Morris Endeavor Agency, and
  • International Creative Artists
  • Agency for Performing Artists
  • United Talent Agency

By law, Hollywood agents cannot charge more than ten percent for selling your script or finding you employment, but they can charge considerably more for "packaging" a project. However, if they receive "packaging fees" they will not commission their clients. Agents can be useful allies to the screenwriter, but many screenwriters get their first breaks without an agent.
